Meet Tatiana

Why were you inspired to join @catcallsofnyc ?

I was inspired to become apart of catcallsofnyc because it was such a great movement and I always had an issue with catcalls and never really thought about any other ways to deal with it besides ignoring or yelling/cursing them out! But once i saw that something like this excited I wanted to make a change, provide awareness and help women not feel so alone!

Why do you think “chalking back” is a good method to raise awareness?

Chalking back is a good method for awareness because it shows people that this goes on way more than you think and that just because it doesn’t happen to you doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen! It gives awareness to women by letting them know they if they have faced this that there is a way to fight back without being physical or impeding on themselves! Hopefully it will eventually make people stand up for others more often as well!

Why do you think ending street harassment is important?

Ending street harassment is important to me because women should be able to walk freely without feeling dirty or feeling too exposed to be out or even feeling disgusting! We deserve respect and we should demand it! We are individuals and we are human and we should be treated as such not animals! It hurts to know we as women are facing this kind of thing everyday and this makes me feel even more passionate about standing up for ending this!

What’s your favorite thing about your city?

My favorite thing about New York City is that you can meet so many different kinds of people like a melting pot! There are some good opportunities if you want to make something of yourself too!

How can your city better address street harassment?

NYC can definitely create more signs, posters, charts about street harassment on buses and trains and bus waiting areas! I almost never see anything talking about catcalling.

What do you hope is the outcome of your account?

I hope the outcome of me being apart of catcallsofnyc makes a huge change within New York and eventually in other cities as well! I want catcallsofnyc to become so big that you can’t avoid it or ignore it! We’re coming!

What’s the most difficult street harassment situation you’ve experienced?

The most difficult street harassment experience I’ve ever encountered was when a guy (on Jamaica ave) catcalled me and when I tried to ignore him he came up to me and grabbed my arm to try and force me to talk to him!

What does being a part of this campaign mean to you?

Being a part of this means everything to me and I’m so happy I made the move to contact Sophie! She is an amazing individual and they don’t make them like her anymore! Catcallsofnyc is the shit.
